When we look at how dry a place is, we often consider the amount of rain it gets over a year. In deserts, this isn't a lot. In fact, some deserts might only experience rain for a handful of days each year. There are even deserts where a whole year can pass without a single drop of rain. And in other deserts, when it does rain, it pours down heavily for a short period and then disappears, not to return until the following year. This unpredictable rainfall is one of the reasons why deserts are such unique and challenging environments.

Now, let’s zoom in on some famous deserts around the world. The Sahara Desert is one you might have heard about. It’s in Africa and is the biggest hot desert on Earth. It’s so big that it's almost the size of the United States! It has sand dunes that can reach as high as buildings and it can get really hot there during the day.

Another hot desert is the Great Sandy Desert in Australia. And as you might have guessed from its name, it's filled with sweeping sand dunes. But it's not just sand that you'll find here; there are also patches of grasslands and shrubs scattered throughout the landscape. Despite the challenging conditions, kangaroos make their way across this sandy, sunbaked corner of Australia.

What about some cold deserts? Take the Gobi Desert in Asia. It’s a desert with really hot summers and super cold winters. Instead of sand dunes, you might see bare rocks and even some ice!

There's also the Antarctic Desert. It’s the largest desert of all, and it’s definitely not hot. It’s covered in ice and is the coldest place on our planet. You won’t find many plants or animals here, but it’s home to lots of penguins and seals near the coasts.

So, you see, deserts are special places where water is scarce, but life still finds a way. Plants like cacti store water in their thick stems, and animals like lizards and camels have clever ways to stay cool and use less water. It's amazing how life adapts to even the driest spots on Earth!
